Mercenary recruitment and commanders
It would be great if you had the option of bringing the commander home with the mercenaries when you recruit - or they just come home with the mercenaries automatically (which would be a very simple change for you to implement).
This would mean the mercenaries would benefit from any speed bonuses your commanders had, and provide added incentives to level up some additional commanders.
Currently once you have recruited, you have to manually go back to the mercenary camp, click withdraw, and then click again to accept. It's a several stage process, which seems unnecessary once the mercenary camp is empty. I can't see any reason to leave commanders in empty mercenary camps; commanders are often needed for other tasks, and with the random respawn of mercenary type, it's not particularly practical to keep them in the camps on the slight chance that the new mercenary type will be immediately useful to you.

Re: Mercenary recruitment and commanders
Well, after scouting I determine the best mercenaries for the job, then check the map for them, up to 19 squares. Sometimes I have been known to get 5 lots of one troop, e.g. 800 Horse Archers (on level 7)... I have 4 recruiting wizards that are level 11+, each with +60% speed boost, plus 2 other commanders, which are primarily attack and defence, but can help recruit if needed. Sometimes I can take soul gems, or artifacts using only mercenaries and Dragons... Plus still generally make a profit in food or gold...
In this way, I have determined that it is possible to play one of the defensive classes pretty actively, especially since you also have axeman, and horsemen (and your other specialist offensive troops).
Picking the right mercenaries for the job is key. Sometimes one type is vastly superior to another depending on what troops you are up against.

Re: Mercenary recruitment and commanders
Personally sometimes I station my Commanders over the daily maintenance so that I can get two days of mercenaries in one go, if I'm lucky. That is not very wise in that it pushes up numbers of units in Map Objects, but I 'm just that lazy.
Nice suggestion anyway.
